Congress returned to session last week, and it was a busy week in Washington

In case you missed it, here is what happened last week...

Protecting the Medicare Promise

In May, Congressman Bucshon introduced legislation to block a Medicare Part B payment model introduced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  A recent letter in the Evansville Courier and Press by a local rheumatologist echoed what 300 patient and physician groups argued in a letter to Congress: this experiment would severely impact the delivery of care for seniors.

The Patrolman of Franklin Street

After hearing the inspiring story of Evansville’s “Patrolman of Franklin Street,” Congressman Bucshon wanted to do his part to honor of Nic Didia, who recently became an honorary officer with the Evansville Police Department.  This story is a great example of the good things happening in our communities and a reminder of what’s really important in life.

Public Health > Politics

Public health should always take precedent over politics. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats voted last week, for a third time, to block a common sense bill that provides the necessary resources to treat and fight the spread of the Zika Virus using a political argument that has been proven false

National Security > Politics

National security should always take precedent over politics. Unfortunately, a secret memo was released last week outlining a political strategy devised by the Obama Administration to defeat the national defense bill that fully funds our military and includes a pay raise for our troops.

Hoosiers in Washington D.C.

Congressman Bucshon always makes a point to meet with Hoosiers who are visiting the Capitol!

Student Leadership Summit Speaker highlight

Last week’s roundup featured information on Congressman Bucshon’s second annual Student Leadership Summit that he is hosting on October 4th. The lineup of speakers is so impressive that we will spotlight a speaker once a week between now and the event. Our first speaker highlight is Brad Niemeier, creator and owner of Azzip Pizza.

Continuing our work on mental health

As a member of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, Congressman Bucshon had the opportunity to discuss various mental health disorder parity laws.  The hearing built on the progress the House made with the passage of comprehensive mental health reform legislation earlier this year. Thousands of Hoosiers suffer every day from diagnosable and treatable mental health disorders, and it’s critical that we reform the way care is delivered. Watch the Congressman’s full comments at the hearing below.

Honoring the sacrifice, remembering the fallen

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives held a ceremony to mark the 15th anniversary of 9/11, and remember the thousands of men and women who were lost on that day.

You can watch the ceremony in its entirety here:

USI Nexus Award

Congressman Bucshon took to the House floor on Friday to congratulate the University of Southern Indiana’s College of Nursing and Health Professions on receiving the first-ever Nexus Award from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.
