#IN08 Social Roundup (8/27/2016 - 9/02/2016)
From historic sites to broadcast booths, it was a busy week.
In case you missed it, here’s what happened this week…
Here in Indiana, we are celebrating 200 years of statehood this year. The bicentennial celebrations remind us of the importance of reflecting on the history of our great state. During a recent trip, Congressman Bucshon had the opportunity to tour the Vincennes State Historic Sites where the capitol of the Indiana Territory still stands today!
Further south, on the banks of the Ohio, Congressman Bucshon toured the historic Angel Mounds, which was home to a 1,000 Mississippian Indians and was built sometime between A.D. 1050 and 1400.
Engaging Local Students
As a father of four, Congressman Bucshon believes it is important for Hoosier students to be prepared with the skills necessary to excel after high school. To that end, he hosted his inaugural Student Leadership Summit last year with a wide range of speakers and events for the 220 student who participated. This year we are raising the bar and have an exciting day planned, including a keynote address from a top official at Facebook! For more information on the 2016 Student Leadership Summit, click here.
The 8th District encompasses a sprawling 19 counties – that’s a lot of territory to cover. You’ve probably seen Congressman Bucshon maintains staff and offices across the district to hear the issues that Hoosiers face, and to conduct outreach with local businesses and organizations.
Local Business Visits
Donning the famous orange apron, Congressman Bucshon participated in a “store walk” of a Home Depot in Evansville. The Congressman frequently tours local businesses to hear firsthand about the impediments job creators face with the federal government and meet with employees to discuss the issues facing Hoosier families.
In the hot seat
Congressman Bucshon makes it his priority to be open and accessible to his constituents, which includes frequent in-studio sit-downs with local media outlets. This week, he sat down with local TV stations in Evansville to discuss a wide range of topics including the House’s work to fund efforts to combat Zika, comprehensive legislation to fight opioid and drug addiction, and the media’s favorite topic – Donald Trump! You can catch his interview here.
Speaking of local TV and radio, Congressman Bucshon sat down with members of the Indiana Broadcasters Association to discuss his support of the great service provided by our local media outlets.
Coal keeps food on the table
We often hear that “coal keeps the lights on.” In a state like Indiana, we know that firsthand. Nearly 80 percent of our electricity is coal-generated. It powers our homes, our businesses, and even those environmentally friendly electric cars! Coal also keeps food on the table for thousands of Hoosiers that depend on their job at the coal mine to provide for their families. As the son of a coal miner, Congressman Bucshon understands this and is fighting to protect Indiana’s coal jobs.
