Bucshon: Senate Democrats Block Bill to Keep Americans Safe

January 20, 2016
Press Release

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement after Senate Democrats blocked consideration of H.R. 4038, American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act, after the same bill passed the House with a bipartisan, veto-proof majority:

“Top administration officials have repeatedly said our refugee programs have significant gaps that could threaten the security of Americans,” said Bucshon.  “I’m disappointed Senate Democrats – including Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly – ignored these warnings by blocking a bipartisan bill to strengthen and reform the process and keep Americans safe which passed the House with a veto-proof majority.”

During a recent press conference Speaker Ryan reiterated that this is a, security test not a religious testthat reflects our values and responsibilities.”

After voting for H.R. 4038, Bucshon highlighted the bill’s national security significance by saying, “When it comes to national security, there’s no room for error. As a representative of the people, I will take every step available to protect the citizens of this country.”

Many of the President’s top national security advisors agree the Syrian refugee program poses a significant national security risk. Here are a few examples:

“It is true that we are not going to know a whole lot about the Syrians that come forth in this process…We know that organizations like ISIL might like to exploit this [Syrian refugee resettlement] program…The bad news is that there is no risk-free process.”  DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson

“There is risk associated with bringing anybody in from the outside, but especially from a conflict zone like [Syria]. My concern there [about bringing Syrian refugees into the United States] is that there are certain gaps I don’t want to talk about publicly in the data available to us.” FBI Director James Comey

“…the concern in Syria is that we don’t have the systems in places on the ground to collect the information… All of the data sets, the police, the intel services that normally you would go and seek that information [from], don’t exist.” FBI Assistant Director Michael Steinbach
