Dr. Bucshon Visits with Local Stakeholders to Discuss Opioid Epidemic’s Impact on Southwest Indiana and Solutions to the Nationwide Crisis, Participates in Drug Take-Back Event

(Evansville, IN) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) spent the day in Evansville focused on the nation's growing opioid epidemic.  His day included a meeting with the Substance Abuse Council of Vanderburgh County and a prescription drug take-back event later in the day at a local Walgreens.

“The opioid crisis facing our nation is ultimately a local one because the lives and families being destroyed are in our communities.  The federal government has an important role to play in solving this crisis, but ultimately the hard work of solving it must be carried out on the ground in the communities that are being ravaged.  I met with one of the groups on the front lines of combatting the opioid epidemic here in Evansville, the Substance Abuse Council of Vanderburgh County, to hear first-hand about the work they do and what more we must do to solve this crisis.  This feedback will help guide me as I work with my colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Committee to develop additional legislative solutions."

After meeting with the Substance Abuse Council, Dr. Bucshon visited an Evansville Walgreens to learn about what resources are available here in the community for Hoosiers to safely dispose of prescription drugs.

“An important step to reduce unintended prescription opioid consumption is to safely dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs from your home. However, for far too long, it hasn't been easy to dispose of them and this has resulted in these medications remaining in homes. Yesterday, I visited a local Walgreens and learned firsthand about what they're doing to help Hoosiers safely dispose of opioids and other prescription drugs.  It is important that we all work together in our communities to mitigate this growing crisis, and Walgreens take-back bin is a great example of what stakeholders in our communities can do to help out."
