Congressman Larry Bucshon Commends NSWC Crane

Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-08) released the following statement after attending the Department of Defense (DOD) Value Engineering Awards at the Pentagon where Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane division received two awards for leading the DOD as a value provider.

Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-08) states:

“I commend and congratulate the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane for another set of impressive awards.  Crane has yet again proven itself essential to the defense of our nation. The hard work and determination by both our military personnel and civilian employees working at Crane has resulted in innovation that will keep our soldiers safe while saving the DOD money.  By receiving these two awards, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Joint Service Award and the Navy Special Outstanding Achievement Award, Crane has distinguished itself as the premier leader in military innovation.”

Background:

Crane received the OSD Joint Service Award for the Automatic Image Intensifier Measurement System. Image Intensifier Tubes are the primary engine that drives the U.S. Armed Forces ability to operate at night.  The Automatic Image Intensifier Measurement System allows Image Intensifier Tubes to be inspected and screened at a very high rate and accuracy to identify those Image Intensifier Tubes that could be recovered and returned approximately 75 percent to service, rather than being disposed of unnecessarily.  The ten year estimated savings is $17.8 million.

The Navy Special Achievement award was granted for the ALQ-99 Output Traveling Wave Tube Modernization of the ALQ-99 Band 4 Transmitter, a radio jamming mechanism, on the EA-6B Prowler.  The techniques leveraged to modernize the design will improve the Band 4 Transmitter’s reliability. The total life cycle savings is over $10 million.

Crane has been recognized twenty-six times in eleven years including seven times in the last two as a leading value provider for the DOD.
