Dr. Bucshon Joins President Trump for Signing of Memorandum on Aluminum Imports

On Thursday, Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. attended a ceremony for the signing of a Presidential Memorandum on aluminum imports with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House.

“Southern Indiana has been directly impacted by unfair trade practices that have distorted the global market for aluminum, depressed prices, and devastated the competitiveness of American businesses. In fact, we lost an aluminum smelter that supported 600 Hoosier jobs as a consequence. This also has potential national security implications,” said Bucshon. “Today, President Trump took an important step to resolve this issue by measuring the impact rising aluminum imports have on our economic and national security. This memorandum builds on our work in the Congressional Aluminum Caucus to protect American workers by leveling the playing for our companies. I thank President Trump for his commitment to this critical issue and I look forward to reviewing the results of the Administration’s actions.”

Alcoa CEO Roy Harvey and Scepter CEO Garney Scott were also in attendance at the ceremony.

BACKGROUND:

President Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum today prioritizing an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 previously initiated by the Secretary of Commerce into whether aluminum imports threaten the economic and national security of the United States.

Bucshon serves as Co-Chairman of the Congressional Aluminum Caucus. In January, he helped announce that the United States launched a trade enforcement complaint against the People’s Republic of China at the World Trade Organization (WTO) concerning China’s subsidies to certain producers of primary aluminum.

Bucshon also led a 2016 letter requesting that the U.S. International Trade Commission examine factors driving increased Chinese aluminum production and the implications of global oversupply on the U.S. market.
