Indiana Congressman Bucshon releases statement on passing of Sen. Richard Lugar

Indiana Congressman Larry Bucshon has released a statement on the passing of United States Senator Richard Lugar.

Bucshon says Lugar was dedicated to the betterment of America and exemplified the dignity of a true statesman every day.

“I got to know Senator Richard Lugar during my first term in Congress, and it was an honor and a privilege to serve alongside one of the giants of Indiana politics. He dedicated his life to Hoosiers and the betterment of America, and in his service, he exemplified the dignity and grace of a true statesman every day. His unmatched knowledge of foreign policy issues made our nation stronger and safer. My prayers are with his family and friends as we mourn his passing and honor his lifetime of service.”

Former Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, a Republican foreign policy sage known for leading efforts to help the former Soviet states dismantle and secure much of their nuclear arsenal, but whose reputation for working with Democrats cost him his final campaign, died Sunday. He was 87.

Lugar died at the Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute in Virginia from complications related to chronic inflammatory demylinating polyneuropathy, or CIPD, a rare neurological disorder, the Lugar Center in Washington said in a statement announcing his death.

Lugar concentrated largely on foreign policy and national security matters. He served in the Senate for 36 years.
