(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released the following statement after House Republicans gathered on the steps of the Capitol to call on Congressional Democrats to immediately provide relief to small businesses struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic by extending the Paycheck Protection Program:
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses – particularly small businesses – have struggled to keep their doors open. Far too many businesses have permanently closed their doors, and many others have managed to keep their heads above water only because of assistance like the Paycheck Protection Program provided in COVID-19 relief legislation passed earlier this year. Our economy has proven to be resilient in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is critical that we provide additional relief for businesses so that we can protect Main Street jobs and keep our economy going until the vaccines and therapeutics that are just around the corner are able to bring this pandemic to an end.
“On forty-one different occasions, Republicans in Congress have tried to bring up legislation that would provide the relief that businesses desperately need by simply extending the Paycheck Protection Program. This is an idea that enjoys bipartisan support, as twenty-three House Democrats have indicated they favor taking this course of action. Unfortunately, at every turn, Democrats in Congress have said no. Instead, their leaders have viewed relief for struggling businesses as ‘leverage’ to try and jam far-left socialist policies that have nothing to do with COVID-19 into law. It is unacceptable that Congressional Democrats continue to hold hostage the Paycheck Protection Program that helped millions of businesses across the nation during this national health care crisis. There is more than $138 billion left in this vital program that remains inaccessible because Democrats would rather play politics than help the American people. Small businesses are the backbone of our nation and they are closing at alarming rates—something entirely avoidable if only Democrats would stop blocking the extension of the Paycheck Protection Program.”
Dr. Bucshon is a cosponsor of H.R. 8265 authored by Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) that would free up $138 billion in unspent Paycheck Protection Program funds, extending the program until December 31, 2020 and allows businesses to take a second loan. He also signed the discharge bring this legislation to the floor.
