Congressman Larry Bucshon visits Williams Brothers Health Care Pharmacy

(Evansville, IN) – Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-08) released the following comment following a tour of Williams Brothers Health Care Pharmacy in Princeton, IN on Monday, January 9, 2012.

Congressman Bucshon (IN-08) states:

“Local retailers have suffered quite a bit due to our nation’s economic downturn.  It is startling to hear a local business in the 8th District describe the regulations that govern the pharmacy industry and the difficulties with reimbursement rates as they try to navigate the government bureaucracies.  As a former physician, I will continue to place an emphasis on the access to quality care.”

Nathan Gabhart, RPh, Vice President, Pharmacy Operations, states:

“Retail pharmacies are constantly facing more and more adverse issues that are having a dramatic impact on a pharmacies ability to deliver the much needed health care to their communities.  The reimbursement from third party payers that pharmacies receive continues to decline while our costs continue to rise.  In addition, the bureaucracy that is in place to resolve these issues is becoming nearly impossible to address.  A pharmacy may be getting reimbursed $70 below their acquisition cost for a medication being billed to Medicare and our only option seems to be ‘take it or leave it’, thereby leaving the local Medicare recipients without a provider.  With the forecasted growth in prescription volume due to the baby boomers that will be taking place, the profession of pharmacy must adapt in order to be able to be able to properly care for this increase.  It’s essential that Congress understands the ‘Main St.’ issues that are taking place in order to help the profession adapt in the necessary ways.”
