WASHINGTON – Today, President Biden signed into law the bipartisan Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act (H.R. 2544), which was introduced by Representative Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) and Representative Robin Kelly (IL-02). This critical legislation will expand the pool of entities who can contract with the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and modernize the system to protect and expedite the organ transplantation process. It will allow for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to run a competitive process to choose from the best contractors for different national OPTN functions (e.g., health IT, logistics). A better-performing national OPTN will better serve patients across the country and save lives. “Today is a great day for countless Americans and their families who depend on the organ donation and transplantation system in America,” said Dr. Larry Bucshon. “The Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act will implement much needed reform, helping to ensure accountability, increase competition, and save lives. As a physician in Congress, I remain committed to ensuring that HRSA has the authority and tools needed to support patients and foster innovation. I am proud to work across the aisle with my colleague Congresswoman Kelly, and I look forward to this law’s swift implementation so more Americans can receive lifesaving transplants.” "I am thrilled that President Biden has signed the Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act. This bipartisan legislation maintains our nation’s commitment to accountability and innovation - and moves our healthcare system forward,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly. “By allowing competitive selection of contractors for key OPTN functions, this legislation promises a more efficient system to serve patients and save thousands of lives. I'm proud to work across the aisle with Congressman Larry Bucshon on this crucial effort and I am eager to see this bill’s implementation." Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. represents Indiana’s 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. ### |
