Congressman Larry Bucshon Comments on Attorney General Holder Contempt Votes
Washington, DC,
June 28, 2012
Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-08) released the following comment in regards to the U.S. House of Representatives votes on contempt charges against Attorney General Eric Holder. Congressman Bucshon (IN-08) states: “No one is above the law, including the Attorney General. Official subpoenas for information regarding ‘Operation Fast and Furious,’ in order to complete a thorough investigation, have been issued in accordance to Congress’ constitutional authority to issue and enforce subpoenas. I call on Attorney General Holder to lead by example as our nation’s top law enforcement official and to respect the request made by Congress and fully comply with the subpoena by turning over all the relevant documents. The family of Officer Terry deserves no less than a full accounting of the facts.” Background: The Supreme Court has reaffirmed Congress’ authority to issue and enforce subpoenas. On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, President Obama asserted executive privilege in regards to a Congressional subpoena requesting documents created after Feb. 4, 2011 regarding “Operation Fast and Furious.” Attorney General Holder admits that he has only given Congress 7,600 of the 140,000 existing documents regarding “Fast And Furious.” The “Fast And Furious” Operation was an ATF program that tracked weapons sold to illegal buyers in hopes of arresting Mexican drug cartel members. Two “Fast And Furious” weapons were found at the scene of the Dec. 14, 2010 shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. ### |
