Congressman Larry Bucshon Comments on Medicare’s Insolvency
Washington, DC,
May 13, 2011
Congressman Larry Bucshon (IN-08) released the following statement in response to the Medicare Board of Trustees annual report on the program’s financial status that was released today. Congressman Bucshon states: “This report by the Medicare Trustees shows the urgency to solve this problem now. With Medicare predicted to reach insolvency 5 years sooner than reported last year, it is imperative that we work to save and protect this program for current retirees and future beneficiaries. We know that Medicare is one of the main drivers in our deficit spending and that it adds to the national debt annually. This is not a problem that we can continue to ignore. The Administration has chosen to play politics as usual with this program by offering no solutions and choosing to punt to future generations. They have already cut $500 billion in funding to the program for seniors without a solution to prevent further cuts that could lead to access limitations and rationing. A board of 15 Washington bureaucrats making decisions about the funding of Medicare (as outlined in ObamaCare) is a misguided approach. Medicare needs a fundamental change if we are to save this program from insolvency. This is why I support the blueprint for a solution outlined by Congressman Paul Ryan in the 2012 budget proposal. This proposal provides a possible solution toprotect current beneficiaries and those near retirement and saves the program for future generations.” ### |
