Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on House Passage of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act

Today, U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-Ind.-08) released the following statement after voting in support of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 2670).  H.R. 2670 was passed by the House by a vote of 219-210.

“One of the most basic responsibilities that the Constitution gives to Congress is to provide for our nation’s defense, and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is critical to fulfilling that responsibility. I am proud to support the brave men and women who volunteer to protect our freedoms and our way of life,” said Dr. Bucshon.

“This year’s NDAA will enable our military to confront the threats to our national security that are on the horizon in the 21st century – including the Chinese Communist Party’s increased military aggression – by ensuring that our national defense is properly funded and that our troops have the tools they need to get the job done.  It also will ensure that our troops and their families are properly cared for by authorizing a 5.2 percent pay raise – which is the largest pay raise in over 20 years – and takes important steps to push back against the Biden Administration’s woke agenda that has no place in our military.  The House has carried out its constitutional duty to authorize the resources our nation’s armed forces need to keep Hoosiers and all Americans safe and secure. I am proud to support this legislation that will ensure our warfighters can continue to protect our freedoms and way of life,” concluded Dr. Bucshon

Highlights of the FY2024 NDAA include:

·         Authorizes $875.4 billion in defense funding and $1 billion for non-defense activities.

·         Repeal of DoD’s mandate that active and reserve servicemembers receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

·         Prohibits funding for the teaching of Critical Race Theory in the military.

·         Reaffirmation of the rights of parents of children attending DoD schools to review curriculum, instructional materials, and disciplinary policies.

·         Measures to further protect the supply chain and defense industrial base against infiltration by the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

·         Fully funded modernization of the U.S.’s nuclear triad to ensure enduring deterrence against the PRC and Russia.

·         Saves taxpayers $40 billion by cutting inefficient defense programs, obsolete weapons systems, and unnecessary Pentagon bureaucracy.

·         Establishes a new Special Inspector General for Ukraine Security Assistance to direct and coordinate the oversite and audit of all aid provided to Ukraine by the United States.

·         Continues the prohibition on adverse action on any servicemember that refuses to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

·         Improves military readiness and strengthens the defense industrial base to ensure our warfighters are ready to fight.
