Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius seems to be confused about whether or not she supports a single payer healthcare system. Here is why. During her recent appearance on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart argued that a single payer system would be the optimal approach to solving our nation’s healthcare challenges. Sebelius responded with her support of a single payer system by saying, “if we could have perhaps figured out a pathway, that may have been a reasonable solution.” Footage of the conversation can be found here. Yet, when Rep. Larry Bucshon, a physician from Indiana, asked Ms. Sebelius if she supports a single payer system during a June committee hearing, the Secretary responded by saying, “No sir. I supported the concept that you build the gap in coverage based on private insurers.” Then there is this. In a 2007 speech at Harvard as governor of Kansas, Sebelius declared, “I’m all for a single payer system eventually.” Which is it Secretary Sebelius? The American people want to know. |
