Dr. Bucshon Cosponsors Legislation Authorizing Federal Funding to Construct Border Wall, Calls on House Leadership to Quickly Schedule Vote

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released the following statement after cosponsoring the Border Security for America Act of 2017 (HR 3548):

“Our nation is confronting multiple national security challenges around the globe the likes of which our nation has not seen in some time, and our national security must continue to be a top priority. For too long, our national security has been at risk because, as a nation, we have not had the political will to achieve real control of our borders. While many illegal immigrants entering our country are simply looking for a better life, inadequate border security allows violent criminals easy entry as well. The men and women who are protecting our nation’s borders do a tremendous job, but we simply haven’t provided the resources, technology, or infrastructure they need to robustly do their jobs. President Trump understands the threat posed by inadequate border security to our national security and has called on Congress to act, which is why I am cosponsoring the Border Security for America Act. Specifically, this bill authorizes $10 billion for the construction of the border wall, adds an additional 5,000 Border Patrol Agents, targets visa overstays through a biometric entry-exit system, and supports local and state law enforcement. Additionally, the bill provides $5 billion to modernize and strengthen ports of entry that will target illegal immigration and drug trafficking. I believe that multi-layered approach taken in the Border Security for America Act will finally provide our nation with the border security that they have been demanding for years and fulfills President Trump’s call to action. I call on Speaker Ryan, Majority Leader McCarthy, and the rest of House leadership to bring this important legislation to a vote in the House of Representatives as soon as possible.”
