Dr. Bucshon Commends President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis’ Final Report

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released following statement after President Trump’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis published its final report:

“In countless communities across Indiana and the nation, opioid abuse and addiction is raging and leaving families broken and communities in crisis. Earlier this week, the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis released a final report containing a detailed list of serious recommendations that can help to stem the opioid addiction crisis that is plaguing our nation. While there are a number of recommendations in the report, I’m pleased that the Commission has endorsed the idea of eliminating barriers that limit patient access to any form of FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) . One of the provisions of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) that I championed was Section 303, which updated the Controlled Substances Act and Office-Based Opioid Addiction Treatment laws to ensure that patients seeking treatment for opioid addiction are offered, and physicians are trained on, all forms of FDA-approved MAT. Prior to CARA, patients seeking treatment for opioid addiction had their treatment determined based on their setting of care, and it’s important that we continue working to ensure that treatment options are based on the individualized clinical needs of patients,” said Dr. Bucshon. “As the House Energy and Commerce Committee continues working on additional solutions to help solve the opioid crisis, I’m sure that the Commission’s report will be a valuable tool.”
