Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Trinity Lutheran Decision

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement today praising the United States Supreme Court's decision in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia vs. Comer:

“Today’s ruling is a victory for religious freedom,” said Bucshon. “The Supreme Court affirmed that it’s discriminatory and unconstitutional for the government to deny a religious institution access to a public benefit solely on the basis of religion. The religious protections enshrined in the Constitution are foundational to the United States and I commend the Supreme Court for upholding them.”

The court ruled in a 7-2 decision that, “[T]he exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution," according to Chief Justice Roberts who wrote the majority opinion.

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. is a physician and Republican member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee serving his fourth term representing Indiana's 8th Congressional district. The 8th District of Indiana includes all or parts of Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, and Warrick counties.
