Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on CR Language

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement after language to protect the health benefits of retired coal miners was included in the government funding legislation:

“As the son of a retired UMWA coal miner and a physician, I’m happy that Congress has come to a temporary solution that will protect the healthcare benefits of retired miners and their families. Absent this legislative language, these benefits are set to expire at the end of December.

“While I understand this is not a permanent solution, it is a step in the right direction that makes sure retirees do not lose their health benefits. I’ve long been working with retired miners, industry leaders, and Congressional leadership to develop a more permanent solution to this impending problem facing Hoosier retirees and will continue working to get one.

“Let’s also not forget why we are in this position. Unfortunately, President Obama and his allies in Washington, DC have waged a regulatory assault on coal that has devastated the industry and the jobs and benefits it supports. As we work toward a more permanent solution, I’m encouraged to know coal – and those who depend on it – will have an ally in the White House beginning January 20, 2017.”
