Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Japanese Prime Minister Kishida’s Address to Congress

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-IN-08), who is a Co-Chair of the Congressional Study Group on Japan and served as a House member on the official escort committee for the Prime Minister’s address, released the statement following Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s address to a Joint Meeting of Congress:

“The United States-Japan relationship is one of the most critical and important alliances that the United States possesses, and is rooted in our shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and upholding the rule of law both at home and around the globe,” said Dr. Bucshon.  “Across all facets of the United States-Japan relationship, our two nations enjoy a close and deep friendship that is even more critical than ever given the growing threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party not only to the national and economic security of both our nations – but to the security of the wider Indo-Pacific region and the world.  Prime Minister Kishida’s address today not only affirmed this important relationship, but laid out Japan’s desire to grow and strengthen the ties between our two nations.”

On Prime Minister Kishida’s Call for Continued U.S. Leadership Around the World

“In his address, Prime Minister Kishida reminded us just how critical the United States’ leadership was in the 20th century in securing peace and prosperity for American citizens and people around the world.  He also clearly laid out what is at stake in the world today – particularly the threat to global peace and prosperity posed by the Chinese Communist Party, Russia, and North Korea.   Under Prime Minister Kishida’s leadership, continuing the work begun by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan has made historic changes to its national defense strategy accompanied with increased defense spending.  With strong allies like Japan stepping up to the plate, the United States must continue stepping up and maintaining our strong legacy of leadership in the world well into the 21st century and beyond,” said Dr. Bucshon.

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. represents Indiana’s 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
