Bucshon Comments on April Jobless Rate

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report released this morning, the U.S. unemployment rate slightly decreased to 7.5% from 7.6% while the economy added 165,000 jobs.  Real unemployment, a measure that includes discouraged workers and those employed part-time who would rather work full-time increased to 13.9%. Today’s report is another reminder that economic activity continues to slow.

Rep. Bucshon (IN-08) states:

“Last month, we saw little change in our nation’s unemployment, which unfortunately has become the new normal.  We are again reminded that the economic policies of this administration are not addressing our nation’s fundamental challenges. Out-of-control federal spending, tax increases, and Obamacare have created too much uncertainty in the job market. The first step in reigniting our economic engine is balancing our nation’s finances so that Hoosier industries, like manufacturing, have the certainty to invest in our local economies and hire more workers.”

On Tuesday, Rep. Bucshon received the “Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence” from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) for his record of supporting policies critical to the success of manufacturing in Indiana and across the United States.

Real unemployment, a measure that includes discouraged workers and those employed part-time who would rather work full-time, was increased to 13.9% from 13.8% and the labor force participation rate was at 63.3%.

The total number of unemployed Americans is 11.7 million.

The number of long term unemployed (individuals unemployed for 27 weeks or longer) was at 4.4 million, which represents 37.4% of unemployed individuals.
