Chamber, local leaders complete first day in D.C.

Agenda has development, prisons, defense, drug crisis, tax reform

“We are finding this such a positive on many levels,” Craig said. “I would say overall this is a great group that’s making important connections and representing our community well.”

More than a dozen business and civic leaders Wednesday packed in a full slate of meetings in Washington, D.C., as they lobbied for the Terre Haute area.

The group, led by the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, packed in meetings with U.S. Sens. Joe Donnelly and Todd Young, U.S. Reps. Jackie Walorski, Todd Rokita and Larry Bucshon; and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, according to a news release from the chamber.

The goal of the visit is to bring business and government leaders from the Terre Haute area face-to-face with federal law makers and government organizations.

Chamber Vice President Kristin Craig and Rachel Leslie of the Terre Haute-based lobbying firm RJL Solutions, principal organizers of the trip, said the chamber is finding the personal contact beneficial.

“We are finding this such a positive on many levels,” Craig said. “I would say overall this is a great group that’s making important connections and representing our community well.”

Said Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett, “The biggest eye opener is hearing about the tax reform process.

The local leaders are stressing Wabash Valley topics and  institutions including rural development funding, the drug crisis, tax reform and the future of a federal prison expansion. Additional topics included defense development, specifically the Terre Haute-based 181st Intelligence Wing of the Indiana Air National Guard.
