WASHINGTON – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-Ind.) issued the following statement after voting against H. Res. 601, which deems the Fiscal Year 2022 budget resolution (S. Con. Res. 14) passed out of the House of Representatives using a procedural gimmick.

On House Democrats’ Deem and Pass Procedural Gimmick:

“After President Biden and Speaker Pelosi let socialist Senator Bernie Sanders write a budget resolution that gives new meaning to the term fiscal irresponsibility, it’s not shocking that House Democrats might not want to actually vote for it,”said Congressman Bucshon.  “Speaker Pelosi and vulnerable House Democrats desperate to avoid taking an up or down vote on the budget resolution are trying to put lipstick on a pig, but they can’t hide the fact that the vote they’ve taken was a vote to pass the budget resolution.  Using swampy procedural tricks to ‘deem’ the budget passed instead of holding a stand-alone vote shows the over-arching unpopularity of this socialist budget proposal and why the American people reject it.”

Statement on Budget Resolution:

“Washington’s spending is out of control and our nation is awash with debt. We’re spending money we don’t have and as a result we are borrowing money – much of it from the Chinese – and adding to the already staggering $28 trillion debt – which is, on average, $217,981 per American household.  If we don’t cut up our nation’s credit card and stop spending money we don’t have, we will be passing onto future generations a legacy of debt instead of passing on the American Dream of unlimited opportunity and freedom.” 

“President Biden has said, “Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value,” while Speaker Pelosi has repeatedly said, “Show me your budget, show me your values.”    I’ll take them both at their word.  What the Biden-Pelosi budget resolution shows the American people is that they value more spending and higher taxes that will hurt Main Street in order to put Washington firmly in control of all aspects of our lives and economy,” said Congressman Bucshon.    

The budget resolution enables Democrats in Congress to fundamentally change our nation by enacting their socialist tax and spending spree on a purely partisan basis via reconciliation that would result in:

• The highest sustained spending levels in American history;
• Raising the United States’ corporate tax rate to a level higher than communist China’s rate;
• Advancing Democrats’ dream of a socialist single-payer health care system by dramatically expanding Obamacare subsidies that will hurt Americans’ access to their health care providers of choice;
• Hurting pharmaceutical innovation, which will lead to fewer cures and treatments and curtail access to life-saving medications for Americans.
• Drastically reducing the ability of American workers to choose whether or not they want to join a union by eliminating right to work protections; 
• Subsidizing wealthy Americans living in high-tax states with a massive tax break that Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has said would be “a giveaway to the rich” and a “gift for billionaires.”  

Congressman Bucshon concluded, "At a time when inflation rates are at an all-time high and continuing to rise, and Main Street businesses are desperate to find help, this budget resolution – and the socialist tax and spending spree it will enable – is the height of fiscal irresponsibility.  What we need is a fiscally-responsible budget that prioritizes growing the family budget on Main Street over the federal budget in Washington.”
