GOP Hoosiers in Congress praise tax plan

Rep. Larry Bucshon, R-8th, said it “is fairer, flatter, simpler, and protects American jobs.”

Most congressional Republicans from Indiana expressed support Thursday for the House GOP's legislation to overhaul the federal income tax code.

“Our plan will help middle class families, simplify our tax code and encourage new investment and job creation. This proposal is pro-growth and will return our economy to consistent and robust economic growth,” Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, said in a statement.

Rep. Jackie Walorski, R-2nd, said in a statement, “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will help American businesses expand, invest, and hire more workers, and it will let middle-class families keep more of the money they earn.”

Reps. Luke Messer, R-6th, and Todd Rokita, R-4th – who are among six rivals for the Republican nomination for a Senate seat – released statements praising the plan. Messer said it “means more jobs, fairer taxes and a pay raise for working Hoosiers.” Rokita said, “By reforming our unfair tax code, more jobs will be created, Hoosiers will take home bigger paychecks, and it will unleash American economic competition.”

In other statements, Rep. Susan Brooks, R-5th, said the legislation “works for the middle class” and “encourages job creation and expansion,” while Rep. Larry Bucshon, R-8th, said it “is fairer, flatter, simpler, and protects American jobs.”

But Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., took a wait-and-see approach, calling the proposal “a first step that will continue to be debated over the coming weeks.” He said in a statement that he favors “a tax structure that is simpler, fairer, and allows Hoosiers to keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, R-9th, had not released a statement about the plan by Thursday evening. Neither had Indiana's three Democratic legislators: Sen. Joe Donnelly, 7th District Rep. Andre Carson and 1st District Rep. Pete Visclosky.
